About the Seahorse Sanctuary
The Seahorse Sanctuary was an aquaculture development located on the Midwest coast of Western Australia in the scenic town of Kalbarri.
The facility was established by conservation biologists Michael and Wendy Payne. Together they supported conservation of the world’s dwindling natural resources by culturing seahorses and other tropical marine ornamental fish species for the home aquarium.
Many fish including seahorses that are currently sold in aquarium shops are captured from the wild, contributing to the depletion of our world’s delicate coral reef ecosystems.
Cultured seahorses offer a ‘clean and green’ alternative to the home hobbyist. There are many advantages to buying cultured tropical seahorses rather than wild.
They are healthy, disease free and are already weaned onto a diet of frozen fish food that is readily available in aquarium shops. This makes them easy to keep in both the aquarium shop and at home.
